Soloist, principal cellist, chamber musician, recording artist, and distinguished teacher, Alan Stepansky is known internationally as a musician whose multi-faceted career exemplifies the highest ideals of artistry, versatility, and devotion to teaching and mentoring the next generation of gifted young cellists. After studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, Alan graduated from Harvard University with a degree in music theory and musicology and the Horblit Prize, conferred for his outstanding musical accomplishments. Following a ten-year tenure as the Associate Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic, he is currently Professor of Cello and Chairman of the Strings Department at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, cello professor and founding faculty of the graduate Orchestral Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music, and cello faculty artist at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. He performs on concert stages internationally, and also can be heard as solo cellist on numerous motion picture soundtracks, television series, and on the albums of noted recording artists across many genres. His teachers included Orlando Cole, Laurence Lesser, and Harvey Shapiro, and his students have won positions in numerous orchestras in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and have successful careers as soloists, chamber musicians, and teachers.

As part of Cello Month, The US Marketing Manager for Pirastro Strings Ed Mingo will be giving an in-depth talk on cello string construction and how to find your tone. The lecture will feature how the different core materials and metal windings affect the playability and projection of your instrument to help you create your own unique sound. As an added bonus everyone that attends the lecture will be entered for a chance to win a set of Perpetual Cello Strings.

Yeesun Kim Masterclass and Recital

Hailed by the New York Times for her “focused intensity” and “remarkable” performances, cellist Yeesun Kim enjoys worldwide acclaim as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. A founding member of the Borromeo String Quartet, Ms. Kim has performed in over 20 countries, and in many of the world’s most illustrious concert halls and Festivals. She is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, with advanced degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music. Her teachers include Lawrence Lesser, David Soyer, Peter Wiley, Hyungwon Chang, and Minja Hyun. Ms. Kim currently serves on the faculty of the New England Conservatory, in the cello and chamber music departments, and teaches each summer at the Taos School of Music in New Mexico. She has also taught at the McGill International String Quartet Academy in Canada, the Suntory Hall Fellows Academy in Japan, at the Seoul National University and National University of Arts in Korea, and for the Foulger Institute in New Jersey.

Carter Brey was appointed Principal Cello, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Chair, of the New York Philharmonic in 1996. He made his official subscription debut with the Orchestra in May 1997 performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations under the direction of then Music Director Kurt Masur. He rose to international attention in 1981 as a prizewinner in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition. The winner of the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Prize, Avery Fisher Career Grant, Young Concert Artists’ Michaels Award, and other honors, he also was the first musician to win the Arts Council of America’s Performing Arts Prize. Mr. Brey was educated at the Peabody Institute, where he studied with Laurence Lesser and Stephen Kates, and at Yale University, where he studied with Aldo Parisot and was a Wardwell Fellow and a Houpt Scholar.

Laurence Lesser Masterclass & Recital

A member of the New England Conservatory faculty since 1974, and president of the school from 1983 through 1996 (following a year as artistic director), Laurence Lesser teaches College and Preparatory cello students and brings unique value to the chamber music experience at NEC and in Boston through his artistic direction of the First Monday at Jordan Hall concert series since 1985.

Laurence Lesser was a top prize winner in the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and a guest performer in the historic Heifetz-Piatigorsky concerts and recordings. In 1976 he gave the premiere of Menotti’s Fantasia (written for him under a Ford Foundation grant) with the New Japan Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa; in 1991, he performed the New England premiere with the NEC Symphony conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich. He has been a soloist with the BSO, the London Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and other major orchestras. He has appeared at the Casals, Spoleto, Marlboro, Charleston, and Santa Fe festivals as well as London’s South Bank Summer Music Festival.

In 1994, Lesser was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2005, he was named a “Chevalier du Violoncelle” by the Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center at Indiana University, awarded for distinguished achievements and contributions to the world of cello playing and teaching.

Blaise Déjardin Masterclass and Recital

Strasbourg-born cellist Blaise Déjardin was appointed principal cello of the Boston Symphony Orchestra by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons in spring 2018, having joined the BSO’s cello section in 2008. He was a founding member of the Boston-based string orchestra A Far Cry, and in 2010 he founded the acclaimed Boston Cello Quartet with three BSO colleagues. He has arranged numerous pieces for cello ensembles, earning four ASCAP Plus Awards and receiving commissions from Yo-Yo Ma, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and A Far Cry. In 2013 he launched Opus Cello, his online sheet music publishing company. He holds a first prize in Cello with highest honors from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris, as well as a master of music diploma and a graduate diploma from the New England Conservatory in Boston.

Amit Peled Masterclass and Recital

Israeli cellist Amit Peled, a musician of profound artistry and charismatic stage presence, is acclaimed worldwide as one of the most exciting and virtuosic instrumentalists on the concert stage today. Peled has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s top orchestras and in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus in Berlin, and Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium. Peled is on faculty at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where he has taught since 2003 and was one of the youngest professors ever at a major conservatory. As an active chamber musician, Peled is a founding member of the famed Tempest Trio with pianist Alon Goldstein and violinist Ilya Kaler. In September 2017, Peled published a children’s book, A Cello Named Pablo, written by Marni Fogelson and illustrated by Avi Katz.
